3:03 PM: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel endorses McCain, Obama
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has endorsed Barack Obama in the Democratic primary and John McCain in the Republican primary.
The Obama endorsement says, in part:
Our recommendation in Wisconsin's primary on Tuesday for the Democratic nomination is Barack Obama. That's our recommendation because change and experience are crucial to moving this country forward after what will be eight years of an administration careening from mistake to catastrophe to disaster and back again.Regarding McCain, the paper says:
The Illinois senator is best-equipped to deliver that change, and his relatively shorter time in Washington is more asset than handicap.
His torturous captivity as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam provides a powerful and stirring tale of one man's fidelity to duty and love of country. To many, this alone might commend him for higher office.
However, his public service afterward also compels a vote for McCain in our state's open primary. As a U.S. senator, he has been - despite rhetoric to the contrary - a dependable conservative voice. But what makes McCain different than myriad conservative voices is his capacity to selectively forsake crowd-pleasing ideology when his principles take him elsewhere.
