7:49 PM: Kohl urges unity
U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl urged unity following the election.
Kohl, who was the party chairman in the 1970s, addressed the room lightheartedly at first. "Tonight, we should all know that the next Democratic ticket to the White House will not be Brett Favre and Herb Kohl," he said. The statement was greeted by a lot of laughter.
The senator acknowledged that the current Democratic primaries is one of the closest in Democratic history and looked at the future optimistically.
"We can finally look forward to a new president that shares our values," Kohl said.
Both Sen. Clinton and Obama care deeply about the country and demonstrate their passion, each day on the campaign trail, according to Kohl. He urged the party to unite to defeat the Republicans once a candidate is nominated.
"We will all need to turn our attention to the real goal, defeating John McCain and regaining the White House," said Kohl.
