6:31 PM: Feingold: State results will help with endorsement decision

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold said if Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton wins Wisconsin with a "significant victory," it would help him to decide which candidate to back for the party's nomination.

"The next important piece of information will be what happens in Wisconsin," Feingold told WisPolitics. "That will be of significance to me, in terms of where I'm leaning."

Feingold said while the war in Iraq has been pushed aside by other issues in the campaign, it will play a major role in the November election.

"John (McCain) and I are good friends, but we could not be more different on Iraq," he said

Both Obama and Clinton have voted for the Feingold-Reid bill, which sets a date for troop withdrawal, he said.

"Everybody thinks Iraq is off to the side. It will be the central issue in a matter of weeks," he said.

Feingold said he doesn't think there will be a brokered convention to name a nominee, as some have predicted.

"It would be interesting and exciting, but difficult," Feingold said. "My guess is there will be a nominee before the convention one way or the other, but it's going to require some complicated discussions."
