JFC establishes fine for pharmacists who refuse to dispence birth control
Sen. Robson and Rep. Sherman offered a motion to fine pharmacies $2,500 for not having someone on duty to offer contraceptive drugs or devices to customers.
Rep. Vos said the motion was "extreme" and wrongheaded because it seeks to "impose our beliefs" on others. He said the bill should at least go to a public hearing, and said the majority was trying to "spring it on people" when no one of the opposing view is aware of it.
"Just so I understand this, this is kind of the anti-conscience clause," Vos said.
Sherman responded that the bill has been brought up in past sessions and has had public hearings. He said that pharmacies have a "monopoly" on distributing these goods and others, and the state controls the regulation of that business.
Robson said women are being denied basic health care and access to birth control in Wisconsin, and said that some pharmacists who are refusing to dispense birth control to women are practicing medicine without a license.
"They're deciding for the doctor that she doesn't need that birth control," she said.
The debate on this one took about a half hour. Passes 12-4.
